Dr. Straub is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education. She holds a PhD in Education Studies from the University of New Brunswick, a Master of Education degree from OISE/University of Toronto in Curriculum, Teaching and Learning in Second Language Education, a BEd from Nipissing University and a BA from Laurentian University.
She has been a classroom teacher (Ontario College of Teachers, 1998) and Vice-Principal. She has taught in the pre-service programs at several universities across Canada as well as graduate level courses at the University of Ottawa. In 2020, she received a Recognition Award from The Canadian Society for the Study of Education/La Société canadienne pour l'étude de l'éducation: Canadian Association for Teacher Education (CATE) for her work exploring how pre-service teachers understand citizenship. She is the co-author of the text, Social Studies: Innovative Approaches for Teachers (2010) and in 2026, co-edited the text Research as Activism in Education: Community-Oriented Perspectives which explores how research initiatives can challenge power structures and promote social justice within education. Her research interests also include teacher education and more specifically French as a second language in initial teacher education programs. Her current work focuses on increasing the number of FSL teachers in Ontario and she serves as Lead for the FSL Challenge Fund (MCURES).

2019-2023 Principal Investigator, Pilot Project: FSL Language Proficiency of Education Teacher Candidates: A Targeted Approach in Yr. 1-2 of a 5 Year Program has received $23 000 as a grant from The Ontario Public School Boards’ Association. This pilot project is designed to support the work of the French Language Proficiency Assessment toolkit project funded by the Government of Ontario and the Department of Canadian Heritage.
