If you’d prefer not to use a mobile device or hardware token for MFA, you can purchase a Security Key NFC. A Security Key NFC is a USB device that plugs into your computer when you sign in: it allows you to sign in without a password by verifying your identity with a Security Key PIN and your fingerprint on the touch censor.
Step One: Purchase a Security Key
- ICT recommends the Yubico Security Key NFC, which can be purchased on for $31.
Step Two: Set Up Security Key NFC for Registration
- Go to and sign in with your @wlu.ca.ca email address and password.
- From the Microsoft profile dashboard, select “Update info” on the “Security info” tile.
- On the security info page, select “+ Add Method.”
- Select “security key” from the list of options, then Add.
Step Three: Register the Security Key
- Select “NFC Device” from the list of options and insert your security key into your computer’s USB port.
- A few dialogue boxes will open:
- Asking you to have your key ready, where you can select Next.
- A windows security box, labeled “Security key setup”, where you can select Ok.
- Asking you to continue set up, where you can select Ok.
- You'll be asked to create a Security Key PIN. Enter your preferred PIN and click Ok.
- Then you'll be directed to place your finger on the finger print scanner on the key.
- When prompted on your computer, name the security key whatever you prefer and select Next.
- You have successfully registered your security key for MFA!
Step Four: Change Your Preferred Microsoft Authentication Method
- Beside “Default sign-in method” select Change. Then select “Microsoft Authenticator – notification” from the dropdown menu.
- Your default method of authentication will be push notifications going forward.
Step Five: Emergency Login Codes
Obtain your emergency login codes in advance to ensure access in an emergency.
If you forget, lose or damage your mobile device or security key, or are experiencing an issue, you can use these codes to temporarily suspend your MFA for 24-hours.
