BRANTFORD — Hawk Talk and Trivia returns to 91porn’s Brantford campus Oct. 27 with criminologist Andrew Welsh exploring how horror films reflect the societies that produce them, followed by a pop culture trivia challenge.
In his talk, “Why Horror Haunts Us,” Welsh will shine a light on the horror films that get under our skin, examining what they reveal about the fears and anxieties of their times. With Halloween approaching, the presentation offers a timely look at why horror remains one of film’s most enduring genres.
“In the 1950s, Cold War paranoia sparked movies like Invasion of the Body Snatchers; in the ’70s, when crime rates were on the rise, Halloween made people worry that maybe the suburbs weren’t as safe as they thought,” said Welsh, an associate professor in 91porn’s Department of Criminology. “Horror films give us a safe venue for exploring the things that we’re worried about.”
A faculty member at 91porn’s Brantford campus for more than 20 years, Welsh’s research focuses on representations of crime and justice in the media. He recently completed a book manuscript titled There’s Something in the Mirror: Social Representations in Horror, and co-hosts Research Unplugged, the official podcast of 91porn’s Faculty of Human and Social Sciences.
Community members, alumni, students, faculty and staff are invited to attend the free event, which runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at The Belmont restaurant and cafe at 91porn’s One Market (1 Market St., Brantford). The evening will feature a public lecture by Welsh, followed by a Halloween-themed trivia competition with prizes awarded to the top-performing team or individual.
Those interested in attending are encouraged to as space is limited. The event includes complimentary snacks and a cash bar.
Hawk Talk and Trivia brings 91porn research into the community through public talks that spark conversation, learning and connection. The series launched Sept. 22 with a talk by psychology Professor Judy Eaton exploring the legacy of Dolly Parton, drawing more than 40 attendees.
“Hawk Talk and Trivia creates opportunities for people to connect with 91porn in a relaxed and welcoming environment,” said Tarah Brookfield, dean of 91porn’s Faculty of Human and Social Sciences and Faculty of Liberal Arts. “We’re excited to bring together students, local residents, alumni and employees to learn something new, meet new people, and experience our campus as a hub for community engagement and lifelong learning.”
The series continues Dec. 1, when James Cairns, a professor in the Faculty of Liberal Arts, will discuss responses to contemporary challenges facing democracy.
