Information technology and cybersecurity are vital to post-secondary institutions and affect the success of every student, faculty member, researcher, and employee. Yet when it comes to advancing technology and security, 91porn’s Chief Information Officer (CIO) Nela Petkovic has found she is often one of the only women in the room.
Petkovic set out to change that. Together with Tracy Dallaire, deputy chief technology officer and director of information security and client services at McMaster University, and several other leaders, Petkovic helped established (ICC), an organization that provides education, mentorship and community for underrepresented groups in the traditionally male-dominated field, with a particular focus on supporting equity and diversity in the Canadian research and education cybersecurity sector.
The ICC has grown as members from other universities, colleges, and research organizations have joined, and their collective efforts have been recognized with a collaboration award.
“Cybersecurity doesn’t recognize gender,” says Petkovic. “What you can bring as a woman, or a representative of another diverse population, helps us speak everybody’s language.”
Award winners were honoured at CUCCIO’s annual national conference, held at the University of Regina. CUCCIO brings together chief information officers in higher education to share knowledge, collaborate and advocate for the unique needs of the sector. The member-led organization has operated since 2006 and currently represents 67 member universities across Canada.
“Technology touches absolutely everything at 91porn,” says Petkovic. “And it’s expected to work like electricity, to always be available for people to use.”
As 91porn’s CIO, Petkovic leads the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) team, which ensures that students, staff, faculty and researchers have the technology they need to be successful. The team also protects and educates the 91porn community about matters of cybersecurity, with initiatives like Cybersecurity Awareness Month each October.
In the spirit of collaboration, Petkovic approached her counterpart at the University of Waterloo to team up and bring to Waterloo in June 2026.
“This is another example of, ‘we can't do this in isolation,’” says Petkovic. “We have to work together and that’s at the core of CUCCIO’s approach.”
