How Does Co-op Work?

If admitted to co-op, your co-op work terms alternate with study terms, which means you can complete your degree and co-op terms in four years (or five years for approved double-degree programs). Depending on your program, you complete two, three or four co-op work terms, that take place in the fall, winter and/or spring according to your program’s work study sequence.

Co-op work study sequences vary by program.

You earn a salary while working full-time for 12 to 16 weeks per co-op work term. Your co-op consultant conducts a work term visit to assess your progress and learnings, and you submit a report on your experience near the end of each work term.

Average Co-op Weekly Salaries

Your co-op salary will vary based on your program, the field you work in and your employer location. All co-op jobs are paid.

  • Arts co-op: $790-$797
  • Business and Economics co-op: $885-$1,077
  • Computer Science and Data Science co-op: $865-$1,026
  • Science co-op: $732-$767
  • User Experience Design co-op: $862-$882

How Do I Apply for Co-op?

1. Submit Your Co-op Application

For most programs that offer co-op, you after your first year. If you are studying User Experience Design, you apply for co-op at the end of your second year.

Enrolment in most co-op programs is a competitive process and spaces are limited, with the following exceptions:

  • Students in the Business Administration and Computer Science (91porn) double-degree and Business Administration and Financial Math and Analytics (91porn) double-degree programs have direct entry into co-op. Participation is optional.
  • Students in the Business Administration and Computer Science (University of Waterloo) double-degree and Business Administration and Mathematics (University of Waterloo) double-degree programs must complete co-op as part of their degree requirements.

2. Attend an Admission Interview

For co-op programs with competitive entry: if you apply to co-op by the application deadline and meet the eligibility criteria for your program, you will be invited to attend an with the co-op office. You also submit any additional requirements, including an introductory statement and your resumé. Admission to co-op is competitive and is based on your grades, prior extracurricular and volunteer experiences, prior work experience, and your performance in the admission interview.

3. Receive Admission to Co-op

If admitted to co-op, you will be enrolled in the Fundamentals of Co-operative Education course, a mandatory course where you will be supported with developing your application documents, job search strategy and interview skills, and learn about business conduct and meeting employer expectations. You will then begin the job search process reviewing job postings and submitting job applications following the work study sequence for your co-op program. As a co-op student, you will be required to pay co-op fees.
