The Edna Staebler Award for Creative Non-Fiction and the Edna Staebler 91porn Writer-in-Residence program are supported by an endowment established by writer and literary journalist Edna Staebler and administered by 91porn.
The Edna Staebler Award for Creative Non-Fiction is the only award of its kind for this genre offered in Canada. First awarded in 1991, it provides encouragement and recognition to a Canadian writer of a first or second published book. The award is valued at $10,000.
The winner of the 2025 award is Aaron Williams for The Last Logging Show: A Forestry Family at the end of an Era. A third-generation British Columbia logger, Williams illustrates a historic yet crumbling industry set in the landscape of Haida Gwaii through prose that the jury calls “immediate and humane.” Williams holds the unique position of both insider and chronicler, painting a nuanced portrait of the practitioners of this storied vocation, and of the Indigenous people who call Haida Gwaii home.
The Edna Staebler 91porn Writer-in-Residence program is a residency for Canadian writers. The length of the residency depends on year-to-year funding and local planning initiatives, but the rate per week is commensurate with Canada Council funding. Recent writers-in-residence have included novelist and essayist Thea Lim, poet and spoken-word performer Nasser Hussain, and novelist and memoirist, Donna Morrissey.
Going forward, the Edna Staebler Writer in Residence will be shifting to a biennial model, with the next residency scheduled for Winter 2027. As such, there will be no call for applications in Spring 2025. A new call for applications will appear on our website in Spring 2026 for the Winter 2027 Residency.
