This full day workshop will include a combination of short, lecture-style information sessions, practical exercises and discussion. The learning environment is interactive, collegiate and fun. In the morning we will look at communication issues that can alienate or confuse audiences, including jargon, abstract terms and unnecessarily complex language. We will discuss tips for powerful language, plus ways to understand your target audience. You'll generate a sentence explaining how your project impacts or benefits your audience, to use in scenarios. In the afternoon we will explore tips for confident verbal and nonverbal communication including vocal delivery, body language and nerves. We'll look at examples from the industry across a range of communication styles. Depending on time, a small number of participants may volunteer to deliver a short speech to the group and receive individual feedback. Note this speech is not compulsory and details will be confirmed on the day.
Learning Outcomes:
-
Identify jargon, abstract terms and unnecessarily complex language.
-
Describe your work using clear, concise and compelling language.
-
Engage with a variety of audiences including technical/non-technical, small groups/large forums, formal/informal, professional/personal.
-
Build confidence in your own style of communication.
Designed For:
This workshop is designed to build confidence in each individual's communication style and can benefit all stages of your career. The workshop is useful to prepare for client interactions, consultant coordination, internal presentations, project pitches, competition juries, design review panels, conference presentations and many other project communication situations in the life of a design professional.
Presenter:
Saneia Norton, Landscape Architect and design communication specialist. Public servant turned entrepreneur, Saneia Norton is a registered landscape architect and design communication specialist. At the NSW Government Architect’s Office she delivered public domain projects from Circular Quay to Broken Hill until a series of mid-career speed bumps became the catalyst for reinvention. In 2016 she founded Saneia Norton Design Communication (SNDC) to help design professionals wield words as powerfully as images, build confidence presenting work and move beyond long-held scars of brutal design juries. SNDC’s workshops have benefited over 500 design professionals including directors, project leaders and recent graduates from firms including BVN, AECOM, Aspect Studios, AJC, SJB, Urban Initiatives, Stockland and HATCH Roberts Day. Saneia is creator of the podcast ‘Dig Beneath Design’ where designers talk openly about their best and worst experiences communicating their ideas. She works part-time at multidisciplinary design office Tyrrell Studio in Manly. |
