2024 PLANET Online | Evidence based decision making (GIS and spatial analysis)
This course introduces participants to spatial data sources, and basic Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
Part one of the training programme gives an overview of where to find spatial data, and how to evaluate the data.
The second part of the course introduces a commonly used open-source GIS software package, QGIS. QGIS works on most operating systems and is also free to use. Understanding the concepts and use of this software is a transferable skill which will also help in using the other most common GIS software, ArcGIS Pro (which, unlike QGIS, is a paid application, and only works on Windows).
Part 1: Sourcing and evaluating online spatial data
There is no shortage of data but how to find and evaluate it is a different matter. While there are petabytes of datasets available, it is often difficult to find them, and evaluate their quality. Moreover, many data sources are also extremely expensive and/or of poor quality.
This part introduces you to types of spatial data, how to find and assess it, and methods to download and use free and open-source data.
Part 2: Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (QGIS)
QGIS or Quantum GIS is an open-source Geographic Information Systems application, which works on most Operating Systems. It is popular in industry because it is open source and does not require a paid license.
This part introduces you to QGIS, how to download it and modify the interface, finding and symbolising data, and basic data analysis and creation of layouts (maps).
Designed for:
This training course is designed for planners and others who wish to expand their existing skills to include GIS. It is an introductory course, aimed at those who have no or basic knowledge of the software. It will also be useful to others looking to refresh their GIS skills, or who use other software packages. GIS skills are in demand across a range of industries.
Learning outcomes:
At the end of part 1, attendees will be able to:
- understand the diverse types of spatial data
- learn the principles of assessing data (currency, relevance, authority, accuracy, and purpose)
- find and download online spatial data sources
- use online platforms such as Queensland Globe, SPP and DA Mapping, local government online mapping platforms, and national and international data sources, such as EO Browser (European Space Agency), Elvis Foundation Data (DEM and LIDAR), Australian Bureau of Statistics, and the Australia Map; and
- download data for GIS
At the end of part 2, attendees will be able to:
- understand the basic concepts of Geographic Information Systems and introduction to symbology
- learn different types of GIS data (and levels of measurement)
- find GIS data
- understand basic vector analysis; and
- style and map design
Presenter:
